Lovejoy is hired by wealthy Australian Greg Veitch, to help him buy antiques to ship back to Australia. Veitch is looking for something special, and thinks he has found it when he is shown the Benin bronze. The bronze is owned by Sir Max Spence but cannot be legally exported. Veitch and Spence cook up a scheme with a local metalworker, Jameson, to cover the bronze in plaster and metallic paint, so it can be exported.

Meanwhile Mary Russell, a friend of Lady Jane and a Judge’s wife, has got herself into some trouble. She had a fling with a man in a hotel and now the police have been to see her, claiming that the man was a gangster and has been shot. They offer to keep her name out of the enquiry if she pays them some money. Her only assets are a set of antique silver spoons, which she tries to sell around the antique trade, without any luck. Eventually she puts one of the spoons in Lovejoy’s pocket at a restaurant. Lovejoy eventually traces her and gets the full story via Lady Jane.

Lovejoy, with the aid of Tinker and Eric mount a sting at a local pub where they record the conversation between the DI and Mary Russell. Eric follows the DI and finds out that he has been struck out of the police force by some three years. Lovejoy confronts the ex DI and swaps his photos for the ex DI’s.

When Veitch gets back to Australia and opens his cast statue he finds a cuddly toy, not the Benin bronze. He flies back to England and has some heavies burn down Jameson’s workshop. When Lovejoy gets back to his workshop he finds his stock piled up on the lawn with petrol nearby. Lovejoy has to get Veitch off his back and hires the ex DI to work his blackmail scam on Veitch.
