This memorial is a small granite marker located on the southwest corner of the Pettis County Courthouse. The marker shows two dogs. According to the Sedalia Democrat - (
visit link) - "The War Dog Memorial was organized by Barry Walter of Sedalia and Dick Kraus of LaMonte after they had watched a documentary about the dogs and their part in military service."
The text reads:
In Memory & Honor of our War Dogs
They have Served Our Country with Devotion and Selflessness
My eyes are your eyes to watch & protect you & yours. My ears are your your ears to hear & detect evil minds in the dark. My nose is your nose to scent the invader of your domain and so you may live. My life is also yours.
K-9 2003
This is an unusual memorial as it honors the dog - a vital part of K-9 units. Dog teams are vital to security and are especially used with Whiteman Air Force Base - located in Pettis County.
