This statue of a tragic figure hauntingly evokes the sheer amount of human grief that descended upon this community after the explosions of the SS Grandcamp, SS High Flyer, the Monsanto Chemical Co., and several refineries on 16 Apr 1947.
Over 600 people died, 5000 were injured, and several square miles of the city were destroyed -- literally in an instant.
This statue has been placed in the Texas City Remembers memorial to the disaster that has been created around Memorial Cemetery, which was created in June 1947 solely to bury the 63 unidentified victims of the explosions and fires. The statue is perfectly matched to its surroundings.
Location description: Near the memorial fountain, Texas City Remembers Memorial
