Madrid's cathedral, The Cathedral de la Almudena (full name is Santa Maria la Real de la Almundena), took more than 100 years to complete. Construction of the Cathedral began in the 1800's but work was not completed until 1993 when the Cathedral was consecrated just by Pope John Paul ll.
There are three impressive decorated bronze doors as the second entrance to the Cathedral from Calle Bailén.The doors were made by Luis Antonio Sanguino (* 1934). In 2000 he was asked by the Cardenal of Madrid to sculpt the enormous bronze doors to the Almudena Cathedral. The doors are decorated with Trinitarian themes with references to the Spanish Catholic monarchy.
