The YMCA has occupies the third and fourth floors of what was once the headquarters of the Boatman's Bank Building and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building was constructed in 1912-1913 of brick, light gray granite and terra cotta and was designed in the Classical Revival style by William Sylvester Eames and Thomas Crance Young and is on register as being owned by the City of St. Louis. Both architects received training at and graduated from WUSTL-Fine Arts (1878). The design received notable praise from an October 1915 article in American Architect: the building is an example of "the great advance in standards of planning and construction of business structures in the Middle West."
The City purchased the site in 1997 to stabilize part of downtown for revitalization. 140 market rate rental apartments are offered (or considered) from the 5th through the 19thh floors.
