[english:] Established in 1638 by Christiano Kopke (from Germany) and his son (who came to Portugal as representative of Hanseca), the house of Kopke is the most ancient of all Port Wine export companies. Through out generations, the Kopke firm was run by several family members or their representatives, achieving excellent reputation within the wine business sector.

[deutsch:] Im Jahre 1636 kam die deutsche Familie Köpke von Hamburg nach Lissabon, wo der Kaufmann Nikolaus Köpke Generalkonsul der Hanse war. Zwei Jahre später gründete dessen Sohn Christian eine Exportfirma für portugiesische Produkte und Spezialitäten, insbesondere Wein, in Porto. Der Namen Portwein war zu dieser Zeit noch nicht geprägt. Als Portwein immer beliebter wurde und ab ca. 1680 auch unter diesem Namen bekannt wurde, war Köpke einer der ersten und führenden Exporteure. Mit der Zeit konzentrierte sich Köpke immer mehr auf den Portwein.
