Rising in the mountains south of Nelson, the Salmo flows generally south for about 55 km before discharging into the Pend d'Oreille River 8.2 km by road northwest of the Nelway Border Crossing.

The Salmo River's original name was the Salmon River, with the 1890s hamlet of Salmon Siding being named after it. Conflict with other places and rivers of the same name resulted in the name change to Salmo (river and town).
Understandably, the name arose from the fact that the river held salmon until, in the 1960s and 1970s, the Pend d'Oreille and the Columbia downstream were dammed, blocking the way upstream for the salmon.
The North Salmo River, about 55 km in length, is joined by the South Salmo after about 80% of its travels. The South Salmo rises to the south east in the US, just south of the border.
Snow pack, rain water and spring fed, it has an average flow of 31.8 m3/s or 1,123 cu ft/s. Its major tributaries, next to the South Salmo, are Erie Creek, which enters at Salmo, and Sheep Creek which enters a few km further south.
For the benchmark hunters, there are benchmarks at the bridge at the mouth and the bridge crossing the South Salmo just before it joins the North Salmo, as well as along its course near the highways.
