First county jail was built in 1828 of logs at southwest corner of courthouse lawn. Second jail built 1836 of brick reportedly at the same location. The third jail built in 1868 of brick in Italianate Style (this one) became the sheriff's residence when the "new" 1896 jail addition was built. The jail houses the county's historical society today and is open to the public. They do ask for a $1 donation for admission if you can.
