The information centre is run in conjunction with the Salmo Chamber of Commerce by a very nice lady who is also a long time resident. It one should have any questions about the area, and she can't answer them, she knows people who can.
The information centre, Chamber of Commerce, Library and Museum share a building on Fourth Street, just a few feet off Highway 6, or Railway Avenue, in the centre of downtown. It is directly across from the large and quite photogenic Salmo Hotel. This is truly one stop shopping at its finest for the historically minded traveler.
The centre is stocked with all the requisite material one may need to edify oneself about the locality. Given that the Chamber and museum are under the same roof, one may also peruse or purchase some large and well done books on local history.
Salmo, originally a mining town, now more of a forestry town, has an interesting history, as well as some interesting sights of a more contemporary nature, most notably the world's largest Canadian penny (which has a story of its own) and the stone murals.
We've all seen many murals in many towns, but have we all seen murals depicting local history and wildlife made of stone? Several years ago, the town commissioned seven murals, six of which are displayed in the town proper. The seventh is on the face of the Whiteline Truck Stop at Erie, a tiny community a couple of kilometres west from Salmo on Highway 3.
