This is a classic nautical flag pole with two yardarms and a gaff. The navy white ensign appropriately flys from the gaff. No other flags were flying when we visited the Navy Museum.
The New Zealand navy white ensign was adopted in 1968. Until that time the British ensign was used. The New Zealand ensign is distinctive with the four red stars of the southern cross on the fly. The Union Jack is in the top inside corner of the flag.
The New Zealand flag is the blue ensign with the same design with the Union Jack and four red stars with a white border.
