Oceanside, once a totally Marine Corps town servicing the troops from nearby Camp Pendleton with seedy bars and tattoo parlors, has grown up into an attractive tourist town with much to offer the out-of-town visitor. While there is still a distinctly Marine Corps atmosphere to many of the city's businesses, they have upgraded their image to be more consistent with the mainstream establishment. The Oceanside Fishing Pier is not only a great place to fish, but also to view the annual whale migration, observe beachside activity, enjoy summer concerts, or dine at the 1950s themed Ruby's at the ocean end of the pier or grab some fresh fish fast food at the Tin Fish under the land end of the pier.
