In the 1980s, when the city of Oceanside needed to raise funds for rebuilding the Oceanside Fishing Pier (for the fifth time since 1888), they knew that they couldn't use the traditional pavers for this purpose. The walking surface of the pier is wood and is subject to extreme amounts of wear. So they decided that the wooden railings bordering the entire length of the pier would be the ideal place to inscribe the names of donors. So now approximately 2800 names adorn these railings.
