The Holly Theater was the most impressive motion picture "palace" built in Medford during the golden age of film. Opened in 1930, the building was designed in the Spanish Colonial style by noted Medford architect
Frank C. Clark, who also designed Medford's other notable theater from that era, the Craterian.
Seating up to 1,200 people, the Holly Theater was the premier movie house during the World War II era and into the 1970s. Due to pressure from new, more efficient theaters, the Holly became uneconomical to operate and closed in 1986.
In 1996, the Holly was purchased by Art and Lea Alfinito, who intended to restore it, ultimately filling a care-taking role and preserving unique features. In April, 2011, JPR Foundation purchased the Holly and announced a new restoration plan to return live stage performances to the Holly. The building's 33-foot neon blade sign and the marquee are now restored and in 2012 they were lit for the first time since the 1970s. Additional work to restore the structure back to 1930 condition is underway as total costs for the restoration project are expected to be $3.5 million.
