"Pergamon was an ancient Greek city in modern-day Turkey, in Aeolis, today located 16 miles (26 km) from the Aegean Sea on a promontory on the north side of the river Caicus.
The most important Roman monument in the acropolis of Pergamum is a temple dedicated to Trajan. He was Roman Emperor from 98 to 117 AD. The Roman Empire reached its greatest territorial extent under Trajan through his conquests in the east. Trajan is also notable for the extensive public building programs and social welfare policies implemented during his reign."
