The mouth of the San Luis Rey River is at the south end of Harbor Beach on the northwest corner of the city of Oceanside, California.

During perios of low water flow in the river, the ocean piles up a tall berm of sand that cuts the river off from direct flow to the ocean. However, the water gradually seeps through the berm and the level of the river remains fairly constant and provides a nice wetlands area for wildlife and waterfowl. During high flow times, mainly during the winter, a small channel is cut through the sandbar and water flows freely into the ocean.
