Railroad was built to haul coal from the region to port on the Lake Erie. The tunnel was constructed in 1945 per the date above the entrance. The rail line was converted to a biking/hiking path during 2000-2005. To preserve the tunnel, a concrete insert was added to give the path structural stability. (Check out the photos.)
The parking coords are for the Rockland Road access point. The walk to the tunnel is roughly half mile on a level grade. (Easy if there is not half foot of snow.)
