Dedicated to the memory of Father Leray and the Sisters of Mercy
Father Leray and the Sisters of Mercy (Mother De Sales Browne, Mary Ignatius Sumner, Sisters Philomena and Antonia, Mary Vincent Browne, Teresa Newman), came to Shelby Springs in July 1863 and established a Confederate Hospital.
Until the end of the war they ministered physically and spiritually to the brave Confederate sick and wounded.
(Father Leray and the sisters came by train from Vicksburg, MS escaping the seige there. They brought with them a trainload of sick and wounded soldiers. Their hospital was established in the Shelby Springs Hotel which had been talen over by the Confederate Army.)
