The sculpture named The Fallen Angel (El Ángel Caído) was made in Rome by Ricardo Bellver (1845–1924) in 1877. The work inspired by a passage from John Milton's Paradise Lost, represents Lucifer falling from Heaven. The sculpture, of great dramatism and originality, obtained the First Medal at the Spanish National Fine Arts Exhibition in 1878, and the same year was cast in bronze for the third Paris World's Fair. Later on it was decided to locate it in the Retiro Park and thus architect Francisco Jareño (1818–1892) designed a pedestal of granite, bronze and stone. The whole monument was inaugurated in 1885. Its dimensions are: height, 7 metres; length, 10 m; width, 10 m. Sculpture's height: 2.65 metres. The pedestal with the statue is located in the centre of ocatgonal granite reservoir. The base of the pedestal is encircled by strange demon-like heads with clawed hands that are holding a Crocodile and a Fish and a Serpent which appear to be struggling to free themselves from the grip of the demon.
