Formed several hundred years ago when a
massive landslide barricaded the valley, Lake San Cristobal is Colorado's second largest natural lake (the largest is
Grand Lake). This overlook takes you along a short trail about 100 feet from the pullout along a sharp turn on CO SH-149. Use caution as the trail transverses a very steep slope with loose rock. Upon reaching the overlook you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the lake and two information signs. This area is rich in natural beauty and mining history and even a
notorious massacre.
Although State Highway 149 is plowed and accessible year round, I would not recommend trying to reach the overlook in snowy conditions as the trail may be very icy and it is a long way down.
