At the entrance gate of the New Zealand naval base HMNZS Philomel in Devonport is the Y turret of HMNZS Achillies, twin cannons that fired on the Graff Spee in the Battle of the River Plate in 1939.

The HMNZS Achillies, a light cruiser,played a major role enging the German pocket Battleship Admiral Graff Spee in December 1939. The Achillies along with the British light cruisers, HMS Ajax and Exeter. All ships suffered damage in the engagement and the Graf Spee sought shelter in the neutral port of Montevideo. Captain Langsdorff scuttled the Graf Spee to avoid the loss of life and surrender to the British. Gun Turret Y, a 95-ton turret with twin Mk XXI 6 inch guns is now at the entrance to the navel base. These are the guns that engaged the Graf Spee in a critical navel battle at the start of WW II
