The Medford Public Library (officially, the "Jackson County Library Service - Medford Branch"), opened its new 83,000 square foot facility in April, 2004. This modern structure replaced the old
Carnegie Library that served Medford for more than 90 years. On the north side of the building is an engraved quotation from Andrew Carnegie:
THERE IS NOT SUCH A CRADLE OF DEMOCRACY UPON THE EARTH
AS THE FREE PUBLIC LIBRARY. THIS REPUBLIC OF LETTERS
WHERE NEITHER RANK, OFFICE, NOR WEALTH
RECEIVES THE SLIGHTEST CONSIDERATION.
~~~~~~Andrew Carnegie~~~~~~
A funding crisis in 2007, largely due to a loss of Federal funds for libraries, resulted in the temporary closure of the facility. Today the library is open, but hours are very limited - if you work until 5:00pm, there are only 3 weekday hours per week unless you can fit your trip into a lunch period. Given the quotation from Carnegie, this is a shame.
