A zinc spire mounted on four zinc plinths. The lower plinth is simulated stone, the second plinth contains the family name CUNNINGHAM on two sides, the third plinth has removable zinc plaques and the fourth plinth is smooth with a ridge around the middle. The lower section of the spire has symbols on two sides. The upper section is draped with curtains on each side. The spire is topped with an urn. The headstone is about 6 feet high. It was assembled by “White Bronze Co., St. Thomas, Ont.” It is unusual in that there are two plaques which appear to be from the original date of assembly prior to 1900 and two others which were manufactured about 1940.

William Robert CUNNINGHAM was a Captain of a Schooner and later a shoemaker in Antigonish. While en route for Halifax in packet schooner "Billow" in May 1843 saw vessel-the barque "Saladin" in distress at entrance to Country Harbour, Guys. Co. Nova Scotia. "Saladin" had run aground on Little Island. No captain or mate were found on the vessel and Capt CUNNINGHAM took 6 crew under arrest to Halifax; two turned Kings witness, the cook & cabin boy, other four convicted of mutiny and murder. They were publicly hanged in Halifax, 30 July 1844. The barque was total loss but the cargo sold for 18,000 pounds sterling; the vessel was carrying bars of silver. Yet Capt CUNNINGHAM did not claim it in Admiralty Court as he should have, but said he wanted no part of money from such a bloody tragedy. (in 2005 dollars the 18,000 pounds would worth about $2.5 million.)
