Greetings! My name is Doug but I go by my Geocaching handle,
NW_history_buff. I'm an Oregon State University graduate and picked up geocaching in 2011 and got addicted right off the bat. I have a daily streak of geocaching at least one cache every day for 105 consecutive days. And that included finding caches in the dead of winter! I have found a geocache of just about every level of difficulty imagined, some involving solving puzzles, some in some steep terrain, other geocaches so small you need a pair of tweezers just to get the tiny log out!
I picked up benchmarking and waymarking in 2012 and am truly addicted to both interests. Benchmarking involves searching and recovering survey marks that one may find on mountain tops, along roads, railroads and bridges. You find them everywhere, all over the country. Seeking out an old benchmark that's been neglected in the woods for decades is like treasure hunting for me (much like geocaching). I even have a metal detector that I use to recover some that have been buried under dirt and brush.
Waymarking involves seeking out places of interest and finding an object or a location that falls into one of over 1100 official waymarking categories that you'd like to post coordinates to in order to share your location with other waymarkers to visit and enjoy and log their own experiences. It involves learning about the local history or appreciating a local hotspot or activity. You are in a way advertising a particular location to the world and inviting them to learn about a place of interest along with you. It's fun!
My posted coordinates to this waymark put you in the parking lot behind Old Town Pizza, a popular spot for past geocaching events. This is a good spot to meet and greet and if you're interested in learning more about the above activities, feel free to message me and we can set up a time on the weekend to get together and experience the outdoors! See ya around!
