Along the boundary between the cities of Boston and Newton and the counties of Suffolk and Middlesex, is this marker.

The marker is located on the southwest side of Beacon Street, where the houses are located. Across the street is the Chestnut Hill Reservoir, which once was a main storage area for drinking water, but now is used for back up.

The marker itself is located on a grassy lawn about 5 ft northwest of steps to a yellow house further back. The monument is about 12 inches square and a few inches high. On the top is the letter 'N' (for Newton) and a basic arrow pointing to the edge facing the sidewalk.

The Historical Atlas on the MassHighway web site has the following about the marker:

"Boston-Newton 17
Location.-The corner is situated in the face of the retaining wall on the southwesterly side of Beacon street, about 600 feet southeast of the driveway between the two basins of the Chestnut Hill reservoir.
Mark.-The corner mark is a granite monument three feet in gheight and 10 x 10 inches in section, dressed on all faces three feet down from the top. The letter B is cut on the northerly face, and N on the top, with a crow-foot at the top front edge to indicate tha the northerly face of the stone is set on the line."

Some things have changed since the description was written. There is no retaining wall, now. Also, the monument is now only inches in height.

The line was established in 1874, when Brighton was merged with Boston and the line with Newton was adjusted. I'm not sure when this monument was made. Thus, the date of the line establishment was used below.

The marker is in good condition.
