Le Centre des arts visuels doit son nom à Joseph-Olindo Gratton, sculpteur (1855-1941). La ville y offre aux résidents des cours et ateliers en arts visuels. Une Oeuvre publique est intégrée à l’architecture du centre et est renouvelée à tous les deux ans. Le centre des arts visuels J.-Olindo-Gratton abrite les locaux de Praxis.

Praxis accueille, accompagne et soutient des artistes en art actuel dans le cadre de sa programmation régulière et d’événements spéciaux tels que la diffusion d’une oeuvre photographique dans l’espace public en collaboration avec la ville de Sainte-Thérèse et l’attribution du Prix Praxis / Hydro-Québec pour la relève en collaboration avec Hydro-Québec et le Collège Lionel-Groulx. Le centre joue un rôle de médiateur auprès de la population des Basses et des Hautes-Laurentides en offrant des événements artistiques, des laboratoires, des conférences, des colloques et des publications. Il encourage le développement professionnel de ses membres, offre des activités de réflexion, d’échange, de parrainage et favorise l’élaboration de projets artistiques collaboratifs comportant une dimension exploratoire ou expérimentale en lien avec le territoire et les communautés.

Praxis art actuel is an artist-run visual arts centre which focuses on artistic enquiry and the exhibition, promotion and dissemination of innovative artistic projects. The centre encourages thematic exhibitions dealing with the relationship between people and their environment with respect to nomadism and everything that flows from this: displacement, wandering, distance, movement, adaptation, traces, impressions, cycles, etc. In particular, it promotes events of an itinerant nature with the goal of creating a sustained presence in the town of Saint-Thérèse and the Laurentian region. Praxis makes available to the public the work of contemporary artists whose practice sheds a particular light on contemporary art’s specificity and promotes its interdisciplinarity. It promotes the work of young artists whose artistic practices are in tune with the centre’s themes by reserving space for them in its activities and exhibition programs. Praxis promotes exchange and the circulation of works of art among artist-run centres in Quebec, the rest of Canada, and abroad. Praxis is first and foremost a centre for making art available to the public, but it is also a centre for artistic enquiry. It does not have a residency program per se. Nevertheless, it is interested in projects of this kind insofar as they enable artistic intervention in the region or the creation of “works in progress” in our exhibition space. The artists’ collective is increasingly inclined towards publishing projects which will provide an additional showcase for artists who deal with its specificity.
