The present stone St Peter's Church was built in 1932 replacing an earlier wood church on the same site completed in July 1863. The Anglican church has an early foundation in Queenstown with the town's found, William Gilbert Rees, being a devout Anglican. At first the services were conducted by lay readers with the first Vicar being assigned in 1869. When the decision was made to build the new church the wood church was dismantled and rebuilt in Omakau where it continues to serve as the St. Mary the Virgin Church.

The new church was built using funds mainly from from three legacies. The church was designed J. McDowall Smith of Dunedin, in a traditional English parish church with Gothic Revival features.

The church continues as an active church with services at 10:30 Sunday mornings.
