Following World War I, Queenstown like many communities was impacted by the heavy loss of life during the War. Fund raising began in March 1920. There was discussion on what memorial should be built whether it be a playground or a more traditional memorial. The decision was to built this memorial archway at the entrance to the Queenstown Gardens. The memorial lists those who lost their lives during the War on one side and all those who served on the other, though many of the returning service members objected with a sentiment "we have received our welcome homes, these boys have not."
The memorial arch is inscribed:
1914 -- 1918
