The Thomas Hockley House demonstrates Furness's ability to bring out the hidden energy in a wall. For example, the entire weight of the corner of the house is brought to bear on a slender colonette. The facade abounds with elements designed to hold the viewer's interest, such as many varieties of brick work and pronounced window sills.
Thomas Hockley died in 1892. His house was altered by Furness in 1894, converted into an apartment building, and it remains in this use today.
