When Fallon was first envisioned, it was believed that a large-scale, government sponsored irrigation project was to be established in the area; irrigation canals were installed, but not to the extent as originally planned. Still, by 1912, the town had electricity, and the in 1920s the town was famous for its cantelope production. Later, Churchill County turkeys graced tables around the county, keeping the name of the town in the minds of Americans. Alfalfa picked up when the other crops subsided, and in 1942 a new endeavor brought Fallon into the spotlight: the town became the home of the Fallon Naval Air Station in 1942. In 1948, the motto "Oasis of Nevada" was tagged to the town, and this sign at the edge of town shows the motto is still in use today.
