This is almost certainly a Cletrac Model W, or at least most of it is. Someone appears to have taken a gasoline stationary engine and mounted it on the chassis. Likely the original engine went south, necessitating its replacement, so the owner used whatever he had at hand. Naturally, the stationary was much taller than the original engine, making it necessary to remove the cowl, leaving the engine to fend for itself against the elements. It shall remain a mystery as to how they cooled the engine.
You'll note the steering wheel, which controls a differential drive to steer the thing. Cletrac had some pretty advanced engineering for 1920. Also, I noticed some welds on the chassis at the rear, suggesting it has had a hard life.
Cletracs originally had a 276 ci engine that produced 20 hp at the belt and 12 hp at the drawbar. Weighing 3418 pounds, they could achieve a drawbar pull of 1790 pounds in high gear. In high gear, one of three available, the machine could move along at 4 mph at 1200 engine rpm. The model W was produced from 1919 to 1932.
Unfortunately, I have only one photo and no stamp markings.
The second photo is to show what a Model W is supposed to look like.
We found this cool machine at The Gold Panner Campground & Pioneer Village, 11.2 km south east of the Cherryville Tempo Gas Station.
