"Convento fundado em 1224, provavelmente por três companheiros de São Francisco, vindos da Galiza. O documento mais antigoque refere uma doação de terras aos religiosos, feita por João Esteves e sua mulher, Maria Martins, revela a presença dos frades em Évora, desde 1250. Bem acolhidos pela população local, começam, de imediato, a receber inúmeras doações de particulares,bem como privilégios dos monarcas. A construção da igreja é patrocinada por D. Fernando de Morais, comendador de Montemor. É cabeça de custódia durante cento e oitenta e três anos. A evolução do edifício monástico desde cedo é condicionada pela estadia dos monarcas, que o ampliam mas também o ocupam.O primeiro de que temos notícia foi D. Fernando, mas só D. João Irealiza obras de raiz, com vista a ter aí os seus aposentos. Em 1439, D. Afonso V obtém licença papal e da Ordem para instalar no edifício o paço real, pois a residência oficial da coroa em Évora tinha sido destruída por um grave incêndio. O rei comprometia-se a reedificar a igreja a troco de receber espaços mais dilatados na casa conventual. Assim, a igreja passa a ser simultaneamente igreja conventual e capela palatina. Neste âmbito, recebe sucessivas intervenções dos reis, desde D. João II, que constrói a capela-mor, a D. Manuel, que deixa a sua marca na decoração e na heráldica. Esta situação de patrocínio eesplendor arquitectónico está na origem do nome "convento de ouro" que lhe é atribuído. Passa de claustral a observante em 1513 e a partir daí os frades vivem mais modestamente, ainda que na dependência do paço, enquanto os reis aí permaneciam, e suportados pelas esmolas e proventos do culto. Extinto em 1834."
