The bridge was completed in 1915 after much delay during its construction. The bridge is 172 meters long and spans the Lower Shotover River. The bridge closed in 1975 when it was replaced by a new 1.5 million dollar bridge 500 meters down river. The bridge fell into disrepair over the years until 2005 when it was restored by the Queenstown Rotary club and is now used by pedestrians and bicyclist traveling from Queenstown to Arrowtown.
