This marble statue of George Washington stands in the rotunda of the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond. The life-size statue was sculpted by Jean-Antoine Houdon between 1785 and 1791 and placed in the capitol rotunda in 1796. A few years later Marquis de Lafayette viewed the statue a few years later and said, “That is the man himself.” The marble statue unfolds in layers of Washington’s life, “General, Statesman, Farmer and Citizen,” and may be the most exact likeness of our first President. This statue has been widely copied and reproduced, but this is Houdon’s original which has stood in the capitol rotunda for over 200-years.
