These bunkers were built 1939/40 as part of a fortification line to prevent German armed forced circumventing the French Maginot line over Swiss territory. Because Germany used the route north of the line over Belgium to invade France, these fortifications never participated in combats.

They were manned until the end of World War II and maintained until the mid-1990s when most of them were decommissioned and abandoned.

The bunkers of Münchenstein were created to protect the entrance to Birs valley. A series of them is located on the forested hill between Münchenstein and Muttenz. When walking up the hiking path from west you pass five of them, maybe there are some others in more remote places.
Era: WW II
