This two-story house was erected in 1880, during the final period of Jacksonville's growth. It is an Italianate-style structure built for John Orth, a local butcher. Orth was born in Bavaria in 1834 and emigrated to Cincinnati at age 18 where he trained as a butcher. By the late 1850s, he had settled in Jacksonville, where he married Ellen Hill, daughter of an Irish carpenter. They raised a family of seven children and Orth served on the city council and one term as county treasurer. He died in 1896 and his son John Stephen Orth took over the family butchering business.
