Hebden Bridge had been introduced to the German city of Stadt Warstein, by St. Pol Sur Ternoise, Hebden’s French twin town.
St. Pol Sur Ternoise had been twinned with Stadt Warstein since 1965 and when people from Hebden Bridge had visited the French town had met people from Stadt Warstein.
After friendships had developed the twinning arrangement with Stadt Warstein was formalised in 1995.
Before the advent of rail and road transport Hebden Bridge was a small hamlet at the junction of a number of packhorse routes. In the centre of the Pennine Hills it is surrounded by a number of other similar communities. Hebden’s main industry has always been associated with the textile industry.
Stadt Warstein and is also the centre of a number of small communities, although larger and more industrial than Hebden Bridge. The three towns are now part of the
three way twinning arrangement.
This small plaque on a wall at the edge of the marina on New Road, was given to Hebden Bridge by Stadt Warstein. The plaque is in German and has the coat of arms of Stadt Warstein on it. The plaque referes to Hebden Royd, this is the area that the town of Hebden Bridge is located in.
