This ship is a real life model of the ships used by the Portuguese navigators in the first stage of the Portuguese Discoveries, in the late 15th Century and early 16th Century. By then, it was the African coast which was explored, all the way to the Indian Ocean and also to reach South America.
Caravel Boa Esperança was built for the World Exhibit of 1998 which took place in Lisbon. By then she has sailing ability, but later the lack of funds blocked any further sailings and the ship was moved to Lagos, where she amuses locals and tourists, as a fixed exhibit.
