At the harbour of Akaroa on the Banks Peninsula is a 4" bronze field artillery piece, perhaps a reminder of the territorial disputes settling New Zealand in the 19th century.

This field artillery piece in the park by the pier in Akaroa is a reminder that peace is sometimes established by force. This is a 4" muzzle loading bronze cannon, typical of field pieces in colonial times. Perhaps it is here from the days of the HMS Britomart, the ship that raised the Union Jack at Akoroa to demonstrate British sovereignty to the French settlers that arrived a week later, thinking they had an agreement with the local Maori on a settlement on the Banks Peninsula. Perhaps this cannon is how the British responded to this claim. In any case, the French settlers arrived a week after the Brits and settled in Akoroa, as British subjects. The French flavour of this town is an excellent reminder of this history.
