Known as dump rakes, this example is a semi automated example, in that it used ground power to dump the hay when the farmer chose to do so. The rake dumped by lifting the curved steel tines up, clear of the hay it had gathered, then lowering them again.
The rake could be used to simply drag the hay into piles, to be later forked onto wagons for the haul to the hay loft, etc., or it could create windrows by dragging hay perpendicular to the windrow, back and forth across the field, then dumping at the windrow. Either way it was very much labour intensive.
This rake was horse drawn, and probably raked many, many acres of hay in its life.
