Eric’s friend Jason, a roadie with rock band Ded Lizards, asks him to sell a rare gold South American figure. He consults Lovejoy who thinks it’s genuine, but he doesn’t know much about it. A little while later Lovejoy and Tinker are leant on by some Hell’s Angels to go see Jeff Diamond. At the same time two other Hell’s Angels escort Eric on his bike to see Jeff Diamond. Jeff Diamond is the manager of Ded Lizards and the owner of the figure. Jason had stolen the figure from Jeff.

Jeff doesn’t want the figure back, but wants it sold. He says it is bringing bad luck. It was originally owned by the band’s drummer. He died in a car crash. Lovejoy takes it to an expert in South American artefacts, Prof David Hayward, who offers Lovejoy £40,000. Lovejoy instead takes it to an auction house. That night Jason is found dead on Lovejoy’s doorstep with a poison dart in his neck.

Lovejoy is approached by a South American dealer called Rosita. She wants to repatriate the figure to South America. Eric is despatched to check up on Rosita. Lovejoy gets Tinker to do some research amongst the trade. Tinker comes back and tells Lovejoy that the figure is part of a bigger piece. There should be a raft. The drummer did have the raft but sold it on to Ronnie Basset. Ronnie Basset in turn sold it to Prof Hayward.

In the meantime Prof Hayward has been found dead at home with a poison dart in his neck and a note from Lovejoy in his hand. Lovejoy goes into hiding. He decides to retrieve the figure from the high security auction room and succeeds in his endeavour. He phones Jeff Diamond and agrees to sell the figure back to Diamond for £2000. He agrees to meet Diamond at his house.

Tinker and Lovejoy enter Diamond’s house while Eric waits in the car with Rosita. Tinker gets locked in the cellar and Lovejoy meets up with Diamond in the attic. Diamond has a dart gun in his hand. Meanwhile Rosita knocks Eric out and follows Lovejoy to the attic. Diamond shows Lovejoy the raft. Apparently Diamond had used the figure to find out who had the raft. Diamond needed the money from the raft and figure to pay off drug dealers. Lovejoy manages to overpower Diamond and call the police. Rosita makes off with the raft and figure.
