"It was the first religious buildings to be constructed within the perimeter of the castle Montemor, after its recapture from the Moors, and there are references to this church by the Bishop Soeiro II in 1206.
It was a grand building of unusual dimensions, with a dome supported by 14 stone pillars, three ships, ground on stone slabs.
It was a very rich temple, its walls covered with frescoes, a valuable collection religious, and it was along the main entrance, the font where, in 1485, was named S. John of God.
The building has benefited from three deep renovations, at different times, but was particularly ruined by the 1755 earthquake.
The poor condition of the building, and the gradual removal of the population outside the castle walls, dictated the removal of the seat of the parish for the Church of S. John of God (now Matrix), who inherited all the religious and artistic heritage of the old temple, including the baptismal font.
With the deactivation of the temple, the degradation of the space has been increasing, reaching (as was current use at the time) to be removed many stones of the walls to serve for new construction forces the walls.
Today is the inside floor overgrown, and the walls have remains beyond the portico of the main entrance, the area of ??the high altar and the sacristy, with the roof completely gone.
Classified as a National Monument, deserved more attention!"
