La-Z-Boy's roots date back to 1927 when two cousins, Edward Knabusch and Edwin Shoemaker, quit their day jobs and formed the Kna-Shoe Manufacturing Company. A 'New Shoe' confusion quickly led to a name change to Floral City Furniture. A contest to name for their first upholstered recliner in 1929 came up with La-Z-Boy. La-Z-Boy was manufactured and retailed by Floral City Furniture until 1941 when the cousins decided to separate the La-Z-Boy reclining chair factory from Floral City Furniture and created La-Z-Boy Chair Company with it's own factory. The newly-completed factory wouldn't produce any recliners for 5 years because of World War II.
Once the war was over, La-Z-Boy produced and expanded and now there are now 5 U.S. manufacturing plants, nearly 70 company-owned retail stores and over 5,000 employees.
