This Memorial is dedicated to those Canadian Forces personnel who died during the Afghanistan conflict between 2002 and 2011 when Canada's combat contribution to NATO in Afghanistan ended. The Memorial Consists of three parts: The black granite outline of a Canadian Soldier in the foreground, etched outlines of the families of the soldiers on a black granite maple leaf, and a red granite maple leaf in the background. The names of the deceased are listed in order on the back of the black granite maple leaf.

All deceased CF personnel are flown into CFB Trenton, and then transported by hearse to the Provincial Coroner's Office in Toronto.
As word of these repatriations spread, ordinary Canadians would assemble outside the airport ramp to observe the ceremony. As well, unofficial groups of Canadians - Police, EMS, Fire, Legion, Veterans, and ordinary Canadians would gather on overpasses and along the highway to pay their respects to the passing convoy. The section of provincial Hwy 2, RCAF Road and then to Hwy 401 all became the unofficial "Highway of Heroes".

The section of Highway 401 from Trenton to Toronto is now officuially the "Highway of Heroes" and is marked as such.

The Repatriation Memorial is a collaboration of the City of Quinte West, various service groups and private donations.

The Memorial was officially dedicated Saturday, 10 November, 2012 in front of almost 3000 family, friends and ordinary Canadians.
