In 1996 the Iola Historical Society built a reproduction of the Townsend School, having for years sought to acquire a one-room country schoolhouse that could be moved to the Iola Historic Village Campus.

The structure is a white wooden one room building with a covered entry. The bell in the bell tower was salvaged from the Twin Grove School, which stood in the town of Helvetia about a mile east of Iola.
