Kangaroo Valley Power Station has two 80 MW pump/turbine units.

The station forms part of the Sydney Catchment Authority's Shoalhaven Scheme which supplements water supplies to the Sydney area. The power station was completed in 1977. During off-peak periods, it utilizes excess electricity from the grid to pump water back up to the Fitzroy Falls Reservoir as pumped storage.

Water is pumped up the system between Lake Yarrunga (formed by the impoundment of the Shoalhaven & Kangaroo Rivers) and Fitzroy Falls Reservoir via Bendeela Pondage using off-peak electricity. Bendeela Pondage is the large body of water directly below the power station. Some of that water is then released from the reservoir to generate electricity during periods of peak demand. Water is transferred via a tunnel, shaft, pipeline, and canal.

Water available for hydro-electric power generation is discharged back down these conduits, driving turbines as it returns to Bendeela Pondage and then Lake Yarrunga. Water is delivered to the power station via the tunnel.

Located on the plateau above Kangaroo Pipeline, Fitzroy Canal connects the Kangaroo Pipeline with Fitzroy Falls Reservoir. The pipeline is located within Morton National Park & is not visible to the general public. The canal is only visible at one point as you drive across it on a major road. There is no pedestrian access.
