The balanced rocks in this area are significant enough to merit a National park Service interpretive sign. In this location, boulders that have broken away from the Shinarump formation at the top of the cliffs has come to rest on the softer Moenkopi formation at the bottom of the cliff. The softer rock erodes away leaving a pillar on which the harder rock rests.
