Der Fährbetrieb zwischen Höchst und Schwanheim lässt sich bis ins Jahr 1623 zurückverfolgen. Zwischen 1911 und 1992 verkehrte eine Gierseilfähre, die auch als Wagenfähre diente, sie wurde nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde die Fähre mit einem Elektro-Hilfsmotor ausgestattet.
Mit Bau der Leunabrücke als Straßenverbindung zwischen Höchst und Schwanheim sollte der Fährbetrieb zwischen den beiden Stadtteilen eingestellt werden. Nach Protesten der Höchster Bürger entschied sich die Stadt Frankfurt 1991 jedoch, anstelle der Wagenfähre eine Fähre für Fußgänger und Radfahrer zu betreiben, und beschaffte die jetzige Fähre "Walter Kolb".
The ferry service between Höchst and Schwanheim can be traced back to the year 1623. Between 1911 and 1992 ran a reaction ferry, which also served as a car ferry, it was equipped with an auxiliary electric motor after the Second World War.
With construction of the Leuna-Bridge as road link between Höchst and Schwanheim the ferry service between the two districts should be closed. After protests from the Höchst citizens, the city of Frankfurt decided in 1991 to run, instead of the car ferry, a ferry for pedestrians and cyclists and acquired the current ferry "Walter Kolb".
