The townsite of Hartman was homesteaded in 1978 by John Hartman, SR. The town itself was started in January 1899. A general store and post office was operated by Hans J. Johnson. Charles F. Bartling owned a creamery. The blacksmith shop was owned by Jarvis W. Phelps. John and Carl Johnson operated a farm implement business. The hardware store was owned by John Hempfling.
John Hartman was the manager of the Hartman, Humboldt, and Wellington Telephone Company.
There was a community hall.
The town went out of existence in 1916.
