Ko Lanta (island Lanta, pronounced "Lun-TAR") is truly one of the fun spots in southern Thailand. Warm waters, cool breezes, lots of palm trees, and a plenitude of small restaurants, bungalows, and bars on the coast make it a spot to head to for a relaxing stay. One way of arriving on the island is by ferry. There are ferries from the mainland and from several nearby other islands, and from the provincial capital of Krabi Province, Krabi City.
There are several piers on the island, this is the main pier, located on the southern side of the main town, which is located on the northern tip of Lanta. In design, simple enough. A "T" shaped building, enter along a walkway (the vertical part of the "T"), and ferries park themselves (or whatever the nautical term is) along the horizontal part of the "T".
A busy place, surrounded by a dozen or more tourist agencies vying for your business, touts offering anything and everything for new arrivals (never say this is your first time in Thailand), taxi (motorbikes and tuk tuks) drivers seeking fares, sun burnt young folk clutching backpacks and each other clambering off pickup trucks ready to embark on their next journey. A fun spot.
Most tickets are purchased at hotels, for a small premium, but of course you can buy here from the agencies. Schedules, there are many different ferry companies, and many small, informal boat rides, so it is hard to pin down times, sometimes. But most boats leave on or about the promised time, but always when they are fully loaded.
A ride to the mainland is a few dollars, the two hour ride to Krabi City $13. The engine produces 80+ decibels of sound (something never mentioned in the tourist brochures).
Advice:
a. If you are a young European tourist it is not necessary to spend the entire two hour trip to Krabi City semi-naked exposed to the tropical sun. Skin cancer is real.
b. The ride along the coast to Krabi City is mostly smooth, but it is open water facing into the Andaman Sea, and India, so it can get rough. Buckle up.
