As it happened in so many other Portuguese villages, the ageing of the population made the existence of a primary school lose its sense. So many schools were shut down, some of them merely abandoned while others were renovated and had different uses.
In Pena, a village in Loule municipality, the local school was converted into a nature interpretative center dedicated to the nearby "Rocha da Pena" natural attraction.
